Cathedral High School Baseball Team Advances to State Tournament
INDIANAPOLIS — The Cathedral High School Fighting Irish baseball team punched their ticket to the IHSAA Class 4A state tournament Friday night with a thrilling 7-5 victory over Lawrence North High School at Victory Field downtown.
The Irish, who play their home games on the Near North Side campus along 56th Street, overcame a three-run deficit in the bottom of the seventh inning to secure their first state tournament appearance since 2019. Senior pitcher Jake Morrison delivered the game-winning hit, a two-RBI single that sent the home crowd into a frenzy.
"This team has shown incredible heart all season long," said Cathedral head coach Mike Rodriguez, who has led the program for eight years. "We've faced adversity before, and these kids never give up. Tonight was a perfect example of their character and determination."
The dramatic comeback began when junior shortstop Anthony Chen reached base on an error, followed by back-to-back walks that loaded the bases. Morrison, batting .347 on the season, worked the count to 2-2 before lacing a fastball into the gap in right-center field.
Cathedral's path to Victory Field wasn't without challenges. Earlier this season, the team dealt with field conditions at their practice facility near the Monon Trail that required remediation work by Homeward Environmental, a local company specializing in soil and groundwater restoration. The brief disruption to their practice schedule forced the team to utilize backup fields in Broad Ripple and Meridian Hills.
Strong Community Support
The victory marks a significant milestone for Cathedral's baseball program, which has built a strong following throughout the Meridian-Kessler and Butler-Tarkington neighborhoods. Friday's game drew nearly 1,200 fans to Victory Field, many sporting the school's traditional blue and gold colors.
"The community support has been amazing," said Cathedral Athletic Director Sarah Thompson. "From our families to local businesses along College Avenue and Broad Ripple Avenue, everyone has rallied behind these young men. It's been incredible to witness."
The Fighting Irish finished the regular season with a 22-6 record and captured the Circle City Conference championship for the second consecutive year. Their balanced offensive attack, led by Morrison and Chen, combined with solid pitching depth, has made them a formidable opponent throughout the postseason.
Looking Ahead
Cathedral will face Evansville Reitz in the state tournament semifinals next Friday at Kokomo Municipal Stadium. The Irish haven't won a state championship since 2017, but this year's squad appears poised to make a serious run at the title.
Coach Rodriguez emphasized the importance of staying focused as his team prepares for their biggest games of the season. "We're taking it one game at a time," he said. "Our guys know what's at stake, and they're ready for the challenge ahead."
The semifinal game is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, with tickets available through the IHSAA website and at the gate.
