Binford Boulevard Farmers Market Returns for 12th Season

INDIANAPOLIS — The Binford Boulevard Farmers Market officially reopened Saturday morning for its 12th consecutive season, drawing hundreds of eager shoppers to the bustling outdoor venue on the city's northeast side.

Located in the parking lot of the former Marsh Supermarket at 5602 N. Binford Boulevard, the market featured 28 local vendors offering everything from fresh produce and artisanal breads to handcrafted soaps and locally-sourced honey. The opening day attracted families from across the Broad Ripple, Butler-Tarkington, and Meridian-Kessler neighborhoods.

Community Staple Returns

"We're thrilled to be back for another season," said Maria Rodriguez, market manager and longtime Broad Ripple resident. "This market has become such an integral part of our community. People come here not just to shop, but to connect with their neighbors and support local businesses."

The market, which runs every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. through October 28, has grown significantly since its humble beginnings in 2013. What started with just eight vendors has expanded to accommodate nearly 30 local farmers, bakers, and artisans during peak summer months.

Among the returning favorites is Hendricks County's Willowbrook Farm, which has participated since the market's second year. Owner Tom Patterson brought fresh asparagus, spring onions, and early lettuce varieties to Saturday's opening.

New Vendors and Offerings

"The quality of vendors here is exceptional," said Patterson, whose farm is located just west of Plainfield. "Customers know they're getting truly fresh, locally-grown produce. Many of these vegetables were in the ground just 24 hours ago."

This season introduces several new vendors, including Fountain Square's Rising Sun Bakery, which specializes in sourdough breads and pastries, and Carmel-based Hoosier Honey Co., offering raw honey and beeswax products.

The market also continues its partnership with the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), accepting EBT cards and providing matching funds through the Fresh Bucks program, which doubles the purchasing power of SNAP benefits for fresh fruits and vegetables.

Supporting Local Economy

Beyond the economic impact, the market serves as a community gathering space. Saturday's opening featured live acoustic music from local musician Sarah Chen, and organizers plan monthly special events throughout the season, including cooking demonstrations and children's activities.

"Markets like this are vital to our local food system," Rodriguez explained. "They provide farmers with direct access to consumers while giving residents access to the freshest possible produce. It's a win-win for everyone involved."
